Prevalence of most common ocular problems among children at a tertiary medical center in Bangladesh

Abstract:
Objectives: To assess the prevalence of most common ocular problems among children in a tertiary medical center and associated socio-demographic factors in Bangladesh.
Methods: It was a retrospective study. The study was conducted among children aged 0-18 years. Most of the children with ocular problems at first identified by other doctors primarily noticed by other department of pediatrics at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) diagnosed the problem. Then they came for examination and treatment by ophthalmologists at outpatient department of Ophthalmology, BSMMU. An assigned pediatric ophthalmologist further examined the children with complicated eye diseases and ensured treatment. Data were kept in a register book. All data were analyzed statistically using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS software).
Results: Among 0-18 years children 872 cases with ocular problem were taken. The most commonly observed ocular problems were optic atrophy (37.04%; 95% CI), refractive error (18.46%; 95% = CI), and squint (11.37%; 95% CI). The prevalence of ocular problems was higher among younger children, boys and children from households dwelling in urban.
Conclusions: Ocular problems in children are a notable concern, with optic atrophy, refractive errors, and squint being the most common conditions. These issues are more frequently observed in younger children, boys, and those living in urban households. This underscores the necessity for focused interventions to improve ocular health in these vulnerable groups.
